Homer is a 4-year-old boy who came to us from the Ft. Bend shelter in 2023. As a young, cute tri-color beagle, we felt he would be adopted quickly. He was placed in a foster home to polish up his house manners. Within a short period of time in his foster home, he had to be rushed to an emergency clinic when he started having seizures that wouldn’t stop. These are called cluster seizures. Diagnostic tests were done to see if there was an organic cause for the seizures and none was found. The recommendation was to try medications and monitor him. He did well for several months but then began having seizures again. The medications were adjusted and again, he did well for several months. Then he had another severe set of seizures that didn’t subside until emergency medical intervention. Again, his medications have been adjusted, and he is doing well after the last incident a few weeks ago.
We never want to give up on any beagle if we feel the beagle can have a healthy life. With our limited resources, we are willing to make tough decisions when warranted due to the beagle’s age or potential low quality of life after a medical intervention. Though in Homer’s case as a younger beagle with no other health issues, our goal is a long and happy life with finding the correct medicine regime for him. Because of his special needs, he is probably unadoptable as most adopters are not prepared to take on this long-term responsibility and cost. The good news is that Homer has a loving foster home that has the right skills to care for him for as long as we have him. His foster mom, Ellen, says he loves hugs, chewing on his hoofies and he always spends time every night before falling asleep with his chew toys. While he never barks or howls, he does make a contented purring noise at times, and he does snore in his sleep.
The veterinarian who is caring for Homer feels that he has a good shot at a normal life without the cluster seizures if we can get his medication adjusted correctly. So, we are not giving up on Homer! His foster family is not giving up on him! So, if you are wondering who the Beagle Angel is…. it is YOU! We are asking that you not give up on Homer either. Please consider giving a donation towards Homer’s medical care so we can give him a healthy and happy life that this sweet boy so deserves!
